Trims, Powertrains, and Towing

The 2024 Suburban is a full-sized three-row SUV that Chevrolet offers in six trims: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country. Most of them get the standard 5.3-liter V8 engine (355 hp and 383 lb.-ft. of torque) but can be upgraded to a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel (standard in the High Country) that puts out 277 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. For the most power, the RST, Z71, and Premier can be equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 generating 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque.

Regardless of the engine, the transmission is a 10-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive is the more popular option. With the combination of the 5.3-liter V8, RWD, and the Max Trailering Package, the Suburban can tow up to 8,300 pounds, making it a standout choice for all your hauling needs.

Fuel Efficiency

The EPA fuel economy estimates vary across the configurations. For instance, RWD Suburbans with the 5.3-liter V8 return 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. With 4WD, that will change to 15 city/18 highway. The 3.0-liter turbo-diesel variants with RWD achieve 21 city/27 highway, while those with the same engine and 4WD pull off 20 city/26 highway. Finally, a RWD Suburban with the 6.2-liter V8 will achieve 14 city/20 highway (14 city/18 highway with 4WD).

Standard and Available Amenities

The entry-level LS is set up with proximity keyless entry, remote start, power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button ignition, tri-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, roof rails, LED headlights, two 120V power outlets, and an array of USB ports (Type-A and Type-C). The LT gains a hands-free liftgate, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, heated leather-upholstered front seats with driver’s position memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and a wireless phone charger. The RST is similarly equipped, but it upgrades to perforated leather upholstery.

The rugged Z71 builds off the LT with all-terrain tires, a two-speed transfer case, a heavy-duty air filter, hill descent control, a front skid plate, red tow hooks, and a specialized front end with a high approach angle. It’s eligible for these options: Magnetic Ride Control (GM’s advanced shock-absorbing system), an adaptive air ride suspension, and an electronic limited-slip differential. The Premier takes after the RST, but gets standard Magnetic Ride Control along with ventilated front seats, a heated power tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, heated second-row outboard seats, an auto-dimming driver’s-side mirror, position memory for the side mirrors and steering wheel, power-folding rear seats, and a power-sliding center console. Chevy furnishes the range-topping High Country with all of the above plus a head-up display and a rear camera-mirror washer. Many of the amenities that are standard on higher trims are offered for the lower ones via optional packages.

Active Safety Features

The Chevy Safety Assist suite comes standard in the 2024 Suburban, providing automatic high beams, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors. At the Premier level, the tech list expands with lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and a safety alert seat, which pulses in the direction of a potential hazard. The High Country is loaded with enhanced automatic emergency braking, a surround-view camera, rear pedestrian alert, and reverse automatic braking. Adaptive cruise control is optional for the RST, Premier, and High Country, while the state-of-the-art Super Cruise hands-free driving system is offered exclusively for the Premier and High Country.

Connectivity and Entertainment

The infotainment system in the base LS consists of an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition, SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a six-speaker sound system, and Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming. The LT, RST, and Z71 move up to a 10.2-inch touchscreen with navigation, enhanced voice recognition, HD Radio, and a 9-speaker Bose audio system, while the Premier and High Country are treated to a 10-speaker Bose setup.
