A trio of trims – Preferred, Select, and Essence – make up the ’23 Encore GX lineup. The Preferred and Select both get a standard 137 hp EcoTec 1.2-liter turbo powerplant. It’s linked to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Select is eligible for a 155 hp EcoTec 1.3-liter turbo, which is standard in the Essence trim. Front-wheel drive is the default, but all-wheel drive is optional. The AWD versions get the 1.3-liter engine with a traditional geared nine-speed automatic transmission. As far as that excellent fuel economy, the 1.2-liter models return an EPA-estimated 29 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The Essence with FWD gets 29 city/32 highway, while every trim with AWD achieves 26 city/29 highway.
The base-level Preferred gets you a lot of bang for your buck with a standard equipment list that includes automatic headlights, heated side mirrors, LED fog lights and daytime running lights, deep-tinted rear glass, keyless entry and ignition, USB-A and USB-C ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, single-zone automatic climate control, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback, and a cargo area cover. The Select is touched up with roof rails, remote start, heated front seats with driver’s-side power adjustments, a rear-seat center armrest, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Essence tops the range with LED headlights and taillights, a 120-volt power outlet, a power-adjustable and fold-flat front passenger’s seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and position memory settings for the side mirrors and driver’s seat.
Each of the ’23 Encore GX trims has a sizable slate of advanced driving aids. These include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. Other safety technologies are available, which we’ll cover in the Packages and Standalone Options section.
All ’23 Encore GX trims are supplied with a multimedia system that consists of an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A few additional infotainment upgrades are available, as detailed in the next section.
Buick sells the ’23 Encore GX with several choices of upgrade packages. The most significant among them are the Road Trip, Trailering, Cold Weather Comfort, Safety, Safety II, Advanced Technology, Experience Buick, and Convenience packages. The Road Trip Package comes with roof rails and all-weather floor mats, while the Trailering Package enables towing (with a 1,000-pound limit) with a trailer hitch, a trailering harness, and a trailer hitch bezel. The Cold Weather Comfort Package (offered only for the Preferred) has remote start and a power driver’s seat. The Safety Package – also for the Preferred – bundles adaptive cruise control, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Safety II Package for the Select and Essence gets lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, too, but not adaptive cruise control.
With the Advanced Technology Package, the Select and Essence will receive the adaptive cruise control system, plus navigation, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display. Those two trims are also eligible for the Experience Buick Package, which provides a panoramic moonroof and 18-inch high-gloss wheels. Finally, the Essence-exclusive Convenience Package contains automatic parking assist with braking, front and rear parking sensors, a rear camera mirror with washer, and rain-sensing wipers. Other notable add-ons include a hands-free liftgate, a black roof, and a 7-speaker Bose stereo system.
