2022 GMC Hummer EV

What was once considered a gas-guzzling bane to the auto industry is returning in a big way after being discontinued for 12 years. If you haven’t already guessed, we’re talking about the GMC Hummer. This time, though, it’s powered exclusively by electricity. This is a major shakeup for the military-inspired Humvee, as it was alternately called, a vehicle that was scorned due to its seemingly unquenchable thirst for fuel. However, thanks to the new Ultium electric motor system, the Hummer has returned as a fully modernized, eco-friendly, and of course, extremely capable vehicle that retains the beastly status of the original model. Two versions of the all-new Hummer EV will be offered: an SUV and a pickup truck. On this page, we’ll be detailing everything we know about the GMC Hummer Pickup.

Trims Levels

The ’22 Hummer EV Pickup will be issued in four trims: EV2, EV2X, EV3X, and Edition 1. GMC is releasing them piecemeal over the next few years. The Edition 1 was the first to become available in the fall of 2021. Although reservations are currently full, you still have the chance to secure a spot on the waitlist (for assistance, ask one of our sales associates at Hurd Auto Mall). The EV3X will be released in the fall of 2022, while the EV2X is expected to follow in the spring of 2023. Finally, the entry-level EV2 is slated to arrive in the spring of 2024.

All trims come with the low-mounted 24-module Ultium battery pack and Ultium Drive motor system. In the Edition 1 and EV3X, the Ultium Drive Motor system puts a single electric motor on the front axle and two electric motors on the rear. With this setup, the two trims produce 850 hp and 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque. That said, the Edition 1’s standard Watts to Freedom launch control mode (which is available for the EV3X) enables it to produce a best-in-class 1,000 hp – and lets the Hummer EV Pickup jump from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3 seconds. The key is the Hummer EV’s ability to lower itself by 2 inches to achieve an optimal center of gravity. Meanwhile, the EV2 and EV2X only get the rear axle dual-motor layout, which generates 625 hp and 7,400 lb.-ft. of torque. According to GMC, the Hummer EV Pickup can tow up to 7,500 lb. or support 1,300 lb. of payload.

Charging and Range

The Hummer EV Pickup has an 800-volt charging infrastructure, and when plugged into a 350kW DC fast charger, it can gain 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Manufacturer estimates state that the Hummer EV Pickup’s total driving range is 329 miles. It’s also the first GMC vehicle set up with the Regen on Demand and One-Pedal Driving (found on the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV). Regen on Demand works by capturing the kinetic energy formed during braking and storing it in the battery to incrementally add to drive range. The driver can use the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without using the brake pedal, or One-Pedal Driving can be used to bring the vehicle to a stop by simply lifting the foot off the accelerator pedal.

Off-Road Elements and Exterior Features

GMC has gone above and beyond to make the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup one of the most formidable off-roaders in the game. One of its headlining features is the segment-dominating Extract Mode, which can activate the adaptive air-ride suspension to add 6 more inches of ground clearance. What’s more, selectable drive modes will be provided so you can cater your performance to specific terrain. The Hummer EV Pickup also comes with a unique CrabWalk drive mode with class-exclusive 4-wheel steering, allowing it to move on a diagonal plane. Some other notable features of the Hummer EV Pickup include protective skid plates, 22-inch wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires, the versatile six-function MultiPro tailgate, and the power eTrunk that’s located under the hood with space for stowing the modular sky panels (more details on those below).

Noteworthy Features

GMC blends durability and sophistication in the Hummer EV Pickup’s cabin. At the forefront of its appeal is the expansive Infinity Roof, which is a removable sunroof with modular panels that can deliver an open-air driving experience. While opaque panels are standard, transparent ones are available. There are two interior upholstery color schemes: Lunar Shadow (black/taupe) and Lunar Horizon (black/light gray), both of which are complemented by bronze accents. The ’22 Hummer EV Pickup also gets a compelling array of state-of-the-art technologies, including a 12.3-inch driver information display and a deluxe infotainment system with a 13.4-inch touchscreen. Music lovers will appreciate that the standard audio system in the ’22 Hummer EV Pickup is a Bose setup with 14 speakers.

Advanced Safety Technologies

The Hummer Pickup has an abundance of airbags and a generous assortment of active safety technologies. The most attention-getting feature is GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system. It works on more than 200,000 miles of divided highways with specific characteristics and includes an automatic lane-changing feature for safely getting around slower vehicles. It comes standard across the board, as does the 18-angle UltraVision surround-view camera system.
