2022 Chevrolet Malibu for Sale in Johnston, RI
Chevrolet did well in choosing the name Malibu for the performance version of the Chevelle in 1964. The southern California beach locale was the pinnacle of coolness then, full of pretty people – mostly a mix of movie stars and surfers. It’s long been a sunny enclave for the richest of the rich, and it was the home of the fictional surfer girl, Gidget, of novel, film, and television fame. But even before Malibu was incorporated as a city (1991), the Chevelle offshoot had become a distinct model (1978). It had a good run until it was discontinued in 1983, only to be resurrected in 1997. Today, the Chevrolet Malibu is the last of the domestic midsized sedans, as well as Chevrolet’s only sedan. For model year 2022, the trim lineup has been condensed, with the L dropping out and leaving the LS as the entry-level choice.
Trims, Powertrains, and Fuel Economy
The quartet of trims for the front-wheel-drive Malibu includes the LS, RS, LT, and Premier. All but the Premier get a turbocharged 160-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Premier’s upgraded powertrain consists of a turbocharged 250 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The official EPA estimates say that the LS, RS, and LT return 29 miles per gallon around town and 36 mpg on the highway; the Premier is rated at 22 city/33 highway.
Standard Features and Options
The LS gets a blend of the expected basic features: cloth seats, keyless entry and ignition, automatic on/off halogen headlights, power side mirrors, a cabin air filter, a 12-volt power outlet, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback. The RS gets a sportier appearance with its rear spoiler, body-color side mirrors, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and black bowtie emblems. On the inside, it’s improved with a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The LT pushes the luxury envelope with remote start, heated front seats, and heated exterior mirrors, along with LED daytime running lights and taillights and dual-zone automatic climate control. But the Premier is the most loaded, getting a heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, integrated turn-signal indicators and position memory for its side mirrors, plus leather seats (heated and ventilated in the front and heated in the back row), driver’s seat position memory, a dual-pane sunroof, LED headlights, a 120-volt power outlet, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, an additional USB port (charging), an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a high-definition rearview camera, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, ambient interior lighting, and a wireless smartphone charger.
The LS, RS, and LT are eligible for the optional Driver Confidence I & II Package containing automatic high beams, forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, rear park assist, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and front pedestrian detection. The Premier-only Enhanced Driver Confidence Package adds all of that plus adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, and enhanced automatic emergency braking. Every ’22 Malibu comes with OnStar and Chevrolet Connected Services (an in-vehicle safety and security system) and Teen Driver technology, a helpful system that encourages new drivers to develop safe habits on the road.
Connectivity and Communications
The first two trims get the Chevrolet infotainment 3 setup, which has an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth for hands-free phone use and audio streaming, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a sound system with six speakers. SiriusXM satellite radio is added to the LT and Premier, but the Premier alone gets navigation and a top-end Bose audio system with nine speakers.
